Many times I asked myself how do vocals are removed from the karaoke? If you are fond of singing on a video karaoke, you may have asked the same question as mine. And I just recently found out about the vocal isolation which can be done on audio editing tools like Audacity.

Vocal isolation just means separating the vocals from the instruments or the other way around. This technique is common in video karaoke or when you hear a piece of music that has become an “acapella.”

Here, we will include the two methods on how you can isolate vocals in Audacity. Let’s begin the tutorial.

How to Isolate Vocals in Audacity

There are two methods that we want to share with you. These are not maybe the best way to do isolation, but will surely help you in some way. Furthermore, we are not professionals who are inlined with this kind of activity. We hope this post can help.

Method 1: Using Noise Reduction Effect

In this method, we will isolate the vocals from a whole track and remove the instrumentals afterward. Simply, this is the process of making an acapella sound, if you are familiar with the word "acapella".

  1. First off, you have to download Audacity on your computer. If you’re running a Windows OS, get the installer for such but if you have an Apple computer, download Audacity for Mac OS here.
  2. Run the installer of the application and follow the onscreen instructions. Once the application has been installed, launch it on your PC.
  3. Now that you have Audacity, locate your audio file and import it on the program. You can do this by clicking on File > Import > Audio.
  4. Select the portion that you want to edit and go to Effects then choose Voice

Reduction and Isolation

  1. Proceed to Action and open the drop-down menu. Click on Isolate Vocals and click on Preview to listen to your audio.
  2. In case there is still a piece of background music or noise, you can fine-tune it by editing the Strength, High Cut Vocal, and High Cut Vocal.
  3. Once you are satisfied with your finished product, click Ok.
  4. To save your file, click on File > Export then choose the format

Method 2: Using the Invert Effect

  1. Open the Audacity app and import the regular soundtrack and instrumental track you want to edit.
  2. Select one from those tracks and use the Time Shift to align the two tracks.
  3. Zoom in the tracks to get the exact alignment, otherwise, the entire process will not work. 
  4. Then, select the instrumental track and go to the Effects menu.
  5. Choose Invert.
  6. Select both tracks or simply press CRTL+A on your keyboard.
  7. Lastly, click on Tracks, select Mix, and choose Mix and Render.
  8. And you’re done.
